I am looking forward to teaching this workshop so close to home! What’s more is I met the hosts, Don and Cheryl, at one of my workshops in 2010 and they are great people. I bet you’ll really enjoy them too. This is a great opportunity to learn on a large, custom designed, post and beam straw bale home. Here is a workshop description in the host’s own words…
Brownsville’s history started over 150 years ago when Mr. Kirk established a ferry over the Calapooia River, which was at that time a major crossing between northern and southern Oregon on the way to California. Although the ferry is long gone, crossing the river still signifies your entry into town on Main Street, which is only about 5 blocks long, but has almost every amenity you’ll need.
Our campsite is about two blocks off Main Street in the large (one acre) back yard of our friend, Joni. You will be accompanied by her goat, chickens, deer, and ducks in the mill creek that runs through her yard. She also has a side yard that will accommodate about 4 RV’s and there are two very nice bed and breakfasts within a block for those who are not as enamored with camping.
Breakfasts and dinners will be served out of Joni’s kitchen on the deck. Lunches will be served on site.
We are negotiating with a special meal preparer (Don’s son) who is a now a food scientist and previously has been a sous chef for some of the finer restaurants in Portland. Our building site is about 2 blocks from Joni’s place. It is a ½ acre lot in a subdivision that we developed about 5 years ago. We wanted to keep the whole 4 acres for ourselves, but economics dictated our creating a 14 lot subdivision, selling the lots and keeping the one at the top of the hill for us. You will be helping to fulfill Cheryl’s 20 year dream of building a straw bale house there.
We are building a custom designed two-story home with post and beam/straw bale construction on 3 sides of the first floor. The garage is on the 4th side. The second floor will be regular stick-built construction with lap – type siding. Total square footage will be about 2350 sq. ft. with 1650 on the first floor.
We are excited to be hosting one of Andrew’s workshops and giving you the opportunity to be a part of our dream while learning from an outstanding straw bale builder and teacher. Attending one of Andrew’s workshops in 2010 was a life-changing experience for us. We’re sure you will experience the same. We hope to see you in Brownsville on Memorial Day 2011.
