This New York workshop is going to be amazing. The plans for this home/B&B are beautiful and I’m looking forward to teaching this East Coast workshop. This is quite a large home and participants will have a wonderful opportunity to really learn how to build a straw bale home. To boot, the host is a professional chef and promises amazing food during the week!
Brief Home Description:
• Post and Beam Construction
• Totally Off Grid
• 3,000 sq ft (4 Bedroom/1 Office)
• Set on 19 beautiful acres
Hosts’ Mission: To create a home that is energy efficient, environmentally sustainable, comfortable and unique while having fun!
In the hosts’ own words:
Welcome to our slice of paradise, 19 acres of sprawling meadows and wooded forest in the beautiful town of Cuyler, NY. We always had a dream of building our own home in a place with lots of natural beauty. A place we could call our family playground for generations to come. We had a lot of “wants” for our dream playground house. We wanted a meadow; we have 9 acres of meadow. We wanted forest; we have 10 acres of forest that gradually drops 100’ downhill. We wanted water; we have a protected trout stream that flows through our land. We got our valley and we are adjacent to 5000 acres of Cuyler Hill State Forest with the infamous rolling county “Finger Lake Trails” which is the largest trail in North America running though State land just up the road from us (a discovery made after the fact)! One can hike for as many steps or miles as one chooses.
Our vision is to utilize our home for family gatherings, vacations, as well as Bed and Breakfast from time to time. Part of our vision is for this home, unlike our current home on Long Island, to be environmentally friendly, welcoming of the animals who naturally inhabitant the area and be able to last well beyond our lives. We have a camper on site that we have been using for the last 5 years while planning and getting to know our land. We have designed a 5 bedroom home with lots of glass for spectacular views utilizing the natural energy of the sun.
We did a lot of research before coming to the conclusion that building a straw house was what we wanted to do. We will also be building completely off grid. Our home will be a one of a kind, hand built and environmentally friendly. Even the local inspector is excited! The straw bale will bring uniqueness with stability, insulation and strength combined with an ability to incorporate artistic calming curves uncommon to stick houses.
By the time you arrive we will have the foundation done, radiant floor heating system in, the plumbing, electric, supports and roof completed. You will be part of history in the making when you help with the exterior walls of this unique Home B&B.What an exciting time!!! Ultimately we will also have a masonry stove inside for heat and a deck surrounding the entire exterior. Sliding glass doors will lead from the living room to our vast yard and inviting Jacuzzi.
There is plenty of room for campers to set up tents and/or trailers. We promise three fabulous meals a day, as well as drinks and snacks for in between. You are all in for a treat while you are here since Frankie worked for many years as a chef in some of the most prominent Restaurants in NYC! He will tantalize any pallet!! He is a wiz at making a blazing camp fire to enjoy the dark evenings and bright stars. Bring any field games, footballs, baseballs as you wish, we have plenty of room. Musical instruments, singing voices and laughter are all welcomed!
Our goal is to learn, have fun and make sure you come back to visit.
You are more than welcome to extend your stay on our property either before or after to explore! Talk to us to work out details.
We are just 40 miles from Syracuse Hancock International Airport, (SYR) which has a multitude of hotels, motels, and Bed and Breakfast establishments. Syracuse bus system can take you to nearby Truxton or DeRuyter where we can arrange to have you picked up. This major city is the Home of the famous Syracuse University, New York State Fair featuring a calendar of attractions all year round, including the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, Syracuse Stage various shows and entertainment. Historic sites and outdoor music in numerous parks are seen throughout this great city. There are a wide variety of Museums for those so inclined. For a vastly different way to spend your time, try your luck at the Turningstone Resort and Casino! No other region has such an abundance of natural beauty and amazing attractions. And, let’s not forget about the wine! After all, the Finger Lakes Region are home to more than 100 wineries serving up smiles and friendly conversation along with the gallons of award-winning wines of almost every variety.
Cortland is the closest major city to us with a smaller nearby airport Cortland Chase Field, (CTX) approx 20 miles. An easy ride to Cuyler. For those who wish to stay at a hotel this is very convenient. Another airport is Ithaca Regional Airport, (ITH) approx 40 miles away. Ithaca is the larger city of the two. Both offer plenty to see and do and are also homes to well known Colleges. There is bus line in Ithaca to Truxton and Deruyter as well. We can furnish schedules and fares if needed.
Short excursions:
A little closer to home, Deruyter approx 10 mins from our site, is a beautiful little old town with a Lake, filled from the Tioughnioga River. The lake is two miles long with an average width of ½ mile, averaging 18’ deep water, within an area of 626 acres. Boating and fishing of all kinds are common sites. Its vastness screams of tranquility.
Truxton is also nearby. It is actually the closest of towns to us. You can pass thru it without knowing you were there until you learn of its treasures. Tinker Falls is a site to behold. A short ½ mile hike into the woods from the road leads you to a 45’ waterfall which falls freely thru the air due to a very distinctive large 100’ overhang! One can actually walk behind the waterfall! It is amazing and known to few. It is part of Labrador Hollow which also has a Pond and a wetland boardwalk.
The Cuyler Hills Forest contains a wide variety of forest cover types, including northern hardwood, Japanese larch, Norway spruce, red pine, white cedar and white spruce amongst others, a wide variety of birds and small mammals and clear freshwater streams which wind graciously thru the forest. Hiking or walking brings a calm peacefulness to ones soul.
Looking forward to our fast approaching workshop and meeting all of you.
Lorraine, Frankie and Family.
