WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

We hope you’ll be able to join us September 22-28, 2011 to help us rebuild a home for the hosts.  David, a carpeneter, and Jill had been diligently hand building their timber framed home for the last 8 years and it was just months away from completion when the tornado came through.  Further, on the night of the tornado, they lost not only their home but also friends and part of their alpaca pack.  Fortunately, David, who had been on the property in a trailer home when the tornado came through, survived unharmed.  Today they count their blessings and say that life for them is completely different post-tornado than it was pre-tornado.  Jill and David don’t take anything for granted and have been touched beyond words by the outpouring of support that they have received from people in their community.  This incredible generosity has inspired them to rebuild as quickly as possible so that they can start giving back to their community.

The Applegate is a great fit for them because they were searching for something small, well designed, livable, and economical to build (materials cost for this build is around $20k).  They intend on residing in it until the time when they rebuild their full sized house.  After that time, the Applegate will turn into a guest home.  Jill and David fell in love with straw bale construction recently after spending several days at a friend’s house who had a straw bale home.  Jill says that she, “Could never build a conventional home after having spent just a week in a straw bale home!”.

This build is perfect for someone who is wanting to learn how to bale a home with all of the typical systems (electrical, plumbing, etc…).  It’s also perfect for anyone that has been curious about the Applegate and wanting to learn how to build one on their own property.  Lastly, this build is a great fit for anyone that is interested in straw bale construction that has been touched by the recent devastation that has taken place in various places around the country due to all of the tornadoes.

The workshop site is  just outside Graysville, a small, close knit community of just 1,400 people and a 40 minute drive from Chattanooga.  There is a large international airport in Chattanooga so access to getting into the workshop is close and easy.

The story of what happened during the tornado on April 27, 2011 is compelling and intense.  If you are interested in reading about it, you can click here for a link to our own write up about it or here for the newspaper story that was printed after the event.
